The life expectancy in many African countries is below 50 years and HIV/Aids is a major contributor. While spending the first six months of 2013 traveling through Africa, it was not uncommon to find complimentary condoms in public restrooms. My assumption is that it must be the governments’ way of promoting safe sex. Considering the lack of any supportive campaign material, the lowest literacy rate in the world and the cut-rate illustrators employed to provide instructions to the illiterate among us, I get the impression that this might be a conscience-thing more than a responsibility-thing.
I had set myself the challenge of only making contemporary adornment with found objects while on my travels so since the condoms were free they fell into that category. Photographs taken at Kolmanskop, Namibia.
